Participation Requirements

To ensure the implementation of Basketball Nova Scotia policies & procedures, clubs will be required to be Basketball Nova Scotia Affiliate Clubs. This means our league will follow all of our Safe Sport requirements including our Coach Screening Policy, Code of Conduct and all other BNS policies, which can be found here.

Not a registered affiliate yet? That’s ok, check out our Club Affiliation Registration page and our Club Affiliation Benefits page for more info.

Age Groups

Birth years for each age category are outlined below. Our regular provincial championship regulations will be in affect for athletes. Your club president will submit your birth years but we may ask for identification in the form of a birth certificate or other, if required to confirm your birth year.

U14

2007 or later

U16

2005 or later

U18

2003 or later
(2002, if currently enrolled in a Nova Scotia High School)

Competition Structure

Based on registration numbers, location and makeup of team rosters, for weekend 1, our league committee will divide each age group up into appropriate divisions. The committee will reconvene after that first weekend of play and adjust the divisions to meet our top priority of meaningful competition for all.

The final weekend of competition will serve as playoffs for each division. Winners will receive recognition for their play throughout the league.

Locations

Basketball Nova Scotia has secured numerous quality venues across the province to host. Our goal is to host some competition at a neutral, mid-province site (ex: Truro, Valley, Antigonish) and some competition within the HRM. Locations and games will be subject to COVID-19 protocol and travel restrictions. Teams will know all their game locations 1 week before the start of league play.

All U18 High Performance Girls & Boys games will take place at locations within HRM.

League clubs are able to host one of our weekends as well! If you are interested in hosting, please contact Christian Ryan to discuss a hosting agreement.

FAQ’s

What is the refund policy if the program is cancelled or changed due to COVID-19 protocols?

We commit to refund clubs for all games that did not take place.

Why isn’t there a U12 program?

We did explore this idea. Although, after careful thought and review with our league committee, it was decided that our U12 and below age groups are encouraged to participate in other sports throughout the summer. Basketball Nova Scotia’s Team Scotia program begins at U14, so we wanted to align this program with our regular summer programming.

My team is participation based, will there be a place for us?

Our goal is to be able to find a place for everyone to play. Keep in mind that our league was designed to fill the gap for provincial team athletes and travel teams without the ability to leave the province.
