Coach Background Screening
Screening individuals is a vital process in order for any Basketball Organization to achieve the Mission of providing a safe sporting environment for all participants. An Organization is responsible to take all reasonable precautions to provide a safe and secure environment for participants in its programs, activities, and events. Screening coaches will allow the Organization to identify and preclude those who may pose a risk to the Organization, and its participants.
Coaches are required to complete the following 4 outcomes:
- Complete and provide a Criminal Record CheckEnhanced version (E-PIC)
- Which is required to be completed every 3 years. An E-PIC can be done through the RAMP Interactive platform(if your club uses RAMP) with the built-in Triton enhanced background checker, and the cost to the club is $25.00 per check. You can also use an online provider called myBackcheck.com or Sterling Back Check.and upload the information into your RAMP platform (if used) or keep a copy on hand with the date of expiry in your records so all coaches are verified.
- Complete Safe Sport Training through The Locker
- All Coaches are required to have an NCCP #
- Provide a Vulnerable Sectors Verification (VSS)*Only if the E-PIC is not clear
- VSS’s may be obtained in person from the options below, at the cost of the coach or the club or as determined by the Basketball Nova Scotia Club:
- Outside of Halifax, must be conducted by the local police service where the applicant lives. Click here for more information.
- Halifax Regional Police Check: click here for information.
- Minimum Coach Education, as outlined by the Basketball Nova Scotia Affiliate Club in consultation with the Organization.
Member clubs are responsible for the following:
- Ensure that individuals coaching within their organization have the proper background screening and checks done per the Coach Screening Policy.
- Keep a record of all background checks for their coaches including their name, contact information, and completion date.
- In the case of a relevant offence, the Club President will either make a final decision within their board or submit the relevant documents to the Screening Committee for review and decision. The Screening Committee will provide notice to the coach of its decision.
- Subsequent to its’ review, the Club President and board members or Screening Committee, by majority vote, will:
- Approve the coach’s participation; or
- Deny the coach’s participation; or
- Approve a coach’s participation subject to terms and conditions as the Screening Committee deems appropriate
| Failure to participate in the screening process as outlined in this policy will result in the coach’s ineligibility for the position appointed. If a coach has a conviction under E-PIC, Basketball Nova Scotia Affiliate Club Presidents have access to the expertise of the Screening Committee. If a coach has a conviction under E-PIC and the Screening Committee is of the opinion that the coach can be appointed within the Organization without adversely affecting the safety of the Organization or individuals, athletes/participants or members of the Organization, the Screening Committee may approve that coach’s participation. The Screening Committee may impose terms and conditions on the coach’s participation.
If a coach subsequently receives a conviction for, or is found guilty of, an offense they must report this circumstance immediately to the Organization.
If a coach provides false or misleading information, the coach will immediately be removed from their position and may be subject to further discipline in accordance with the Organization’s policies. |
