Everyone has the right to participate in a sport environment free from maltreatment. Practicing safe sport means ensuring the physical, emotional, and social well-being of all participants: athletes, coaches, officials, parents, and volunteers.
![]() | Basketball Nova Scotia has taken the pledge to commit to the Responsible Coaching Movement and aligns with the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS). |
The Three Steps to Responsible Coaching help ensure everyone benefits from sport participation in a safe, healthy, and fun environment. This framework encourages all coaches and sport organizations to learn and apply consistent best practices:
1. Rule of Two - Never be alone with an athlete. Always ensure two screened and trained adults are present.
2. Background Screening - All coaches and volunteers undergo appropriate screening based on their role and level of contact.
3. Ethics & Respect Training - All team personnel must complete Safe Sport and ethics-related training through The Locker and GamePlan.
We also support and follow the principles outlined by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) and their Abuse-Free Sport initiative — Canada’s independent system for preventing and addressing maltreatment in sport.
